🧰 There’s More Than One Way to Make a Difference. Speaking Out Is One of Them

With rallies and demonstrations planned regularly around the country, it’s a timely moment to remember: Taking action can take many forms. And that’s a good thing.

Some people question whether protest events or critical Facebook posts make a difference. They see rallies as symbolic, or social media posts as preaching to the choir.

But let’s not underestimate the value of speaking out.

Whenever someone raises a concern — at a rally, in a post, or in a conversation — it encourages others to find their voice too. It sends a signal: We see what’s happening. We care. And we’re not OK with it.

That’s how movements grow. People realize they’re not alone. They see they’re part of something larger.

And yes, some people may hesitate to speak out — whether in public, online, or even in small groups. That fear is real.

But so is our strength when we show up together. The more of us who speak out, the harder it is to silence or intimidate any one of us.

Public expression can spark something deeper. Speaking out often inspires others to act — together — whether it’s calling lawmakers, joining advocacy groups, or writing letters to the editor.

And from there, many people take the next step: volunteering on campaigns, supporting candidates, and helping shape the future in other ways.

Change doesn’t begin with grand gestures. It begins with people deciding to show up and speak out — in whatever way they can.

So, if you feel compelled to raise your voice, know this: It matters. And it might just help others find the courage to do the same.

If you're reading the headlines and feeling furious about the Republican budget — here's where your outrage can do some good.

As the current extreme Republican Party pushes harmful policies in Congress, state legislatures, and the White House, a growing number of organizations are holding them accountable — publicly and directly. Some use watchdog tactics and investigations.

Others go even further: They put your donations to work funding bold, attention-grabbing, local campaigns — including TV commercials, billboards, digital media, and newspaper ads — that expose GOP extremism and its real-life consequences.

This guide highlights two types of groups — plus some Washington state organizations:

Those running high-profile public messaging campaigns
Those conducting watchdog work, research, and advocacy that help shape those messages — and back them up with facts

🎯 Leading GOP Opposition Groups

These organizations directly target Republican politicians, policies, and misinformation. Most are progressive-aligned political action committees (super PACs) or political media groups. Some run bold public campaigns that turn donations into TV ads, billboards, and digital outreach.

American Bridge 21st Century

A progressive super PAC specializing in opposition research to expose Republican candidates and officials. It tracks right-wing extremism and policy hypocrisy through ads and reporting. Known for public media campaigns including digital ads and strategic media placement

MeidasTouch

A media-savvy super PAC known for viral videos and strong progressive messaging against GOP corruption and disinformation. Regularly runs TV, digital, and social media ad campaigns funded by donors.

MoveOn / MoveOn Political Action

A prominent progressive grassroots organization that combines activism, issue advocacy, and electoral support. MoveOn uses donations to run national and local campaigns, including ads, digital outreach, and petition-based pressure.

The Lincoln Project

A high-profile media and strategy organization founded by Republicans who broke with their party over Trump and extremism. Known for hard-hitting ads and messaging campaigns targeting Trump and GOP enablers. While no longer a PAC, it continues using donations for public messaging.

🔥 Washington State: Expose GOP Votes That Harm Our Communities

In Central and Eastern Washington, two Republicans in Congress backed this harmful budget — despite how it hurts working families, veterans, seniors, and rural communities:

Rep. Dan Newhouse (4th District) — Yakima Valley, Tri-Cities, Moses Lake, and more
Rep. Michael Baumgartner (5th District) — Spokane, Walla Walla, Colville, and the Palouse

The other organizations listed on this page might target Newhouse and Baumgartner, but if you want to support actions locally, consider these groups:

Fuse Washington — Progressive, well-organized, and unafraid to call out Republicans by name. Known for issue campaigns, scorecards, and electoral organizing.
Indivisible in Washington State — This tool at the national Indivisible can help you Find a Group in your community. There are many of them in the state!
Progressive Voters Guide (by Fuse) — Highlights right-wing candidates and their policy consequences. Offers shareable talking points, especially during election season.

🕵️ Allied Watchdog & Accountability Groups

These organizations don’t always run public-facing ad campaigns, but their research, media pressure, and investigations provide critical support for holding Republicans accountable.

Accountable.US

A nonprofit watchdog group investigating government corruption, corporate influence, and right-wing disinformation. Their findings often support media coverage and ad campaigns by allied organizations.

Public Citizen

A nonpartisan nonprofit founded by Ralph Nader. It fights for campaign finance reform, consumer protection, ethics in government, and accountability. While not ad-focused, its advocacy influences media and public debates.

Republican Accountability / Republican Accountability PAC

Founded by conservatives and former Republicans to oppose MAGA extremism and support democracy. They run media campaigns highlighting dangerous Republican actions and defending democracy-focused values. Their PAC occasionally funds TV or digital ad campaigns.

🧰When People are Informed, They Become More Powerful

Back in the ‘80s, I was an active volunteer with groups in Seattle working to stop the nuclear arms race. I believe our efforts nationwide helped slow it down. But again and again, I’d hear people say things like:

"I’m concerned. I’m worried. I’m frustrated. I’m angry. I’m scared. But what can I do? I’m just one person. And the politicians, companies, and countries pushing for more and more weapons are so powerful."

We had an answer for them:

"You can’t single-handedly stop the arms race. But you can do things to help stop it."

"You can make phone calls and write letters. You can meet with elected officials and show up at rallies. You can learn more. You can talk with friends, family, classmates, neighbors, and colleagues. You can speak out. And most importantly—you can work with others. You are not alone."

"Thank you so much for your support if you’ve already volunteered, joined, or donated to organizations doing this work. We need you."

That experience, along with my continuing political involvement and my career in journalism and government communications convinced me of something important:

When people are informed, connected, and have resources and opportunities to help them act, they become more confident, more powerful, and more effective.

The First Amendment protects your right to protest—as long as it’s peaceful. Here’s what to know:

✅ What You Can Do

Gather peacefully in public places like sidewalks, parks, or streets.
Speak out, hold signs, and chant, even if your message is unpopular.
Record public events and police from a safe distance.

🚫 What You Can’t Do

Use or threaten violence. It’s not protected.
Block traffic or entrances without a permit.
Enter private property without permission.
Bring weapons. They can escalate tensions or break local laws.

🛑 If Police Approach You

Stay calm. Ask: “Am I free to leave?”
If detained, say: “I want a lawyer. I choose to stay silent.”
Don’t resist—even if you think the arrest is unfair.

⚠️ If Someone Tries to Disrupt Your Protest

Don’t engage with hecklers or agitators.
Stay peaceful and walk away if needed.
Tell the organizers or police about threats.
Record safely but only if it’s safe to do so.

Suggestions for personalizing your message

Specificity is key: The more specific you can be about the issue or legislation, the better. Include bill numbers (e.g., HR 123, S 456) whenever possible.
Focus on local impact: While national issues are important, emphasizing the local impact on your community can be very effective.
Keep it brief: While you want to be persuasive, elected officials get many emails. Keeping your message concise increases the likelihood that it will be read.
Consider adding your phone number: The email form on their official website will likely request your phone number. But while you’re writing an email, adding "My phone number is xxx-xxx-xxxx if you would like to discuss this further" can increase the likelihood of a personal contact.
Tailor to the recipient: Research your representative's or senator's past positions and briefly tailor your argument accordingly. If they've shown support for similar issues, mention it. If they've opposed, address their potential concerns directly.
Fact-check your information: Ensure any facts, statistics or anecdotes you include are accurate and from reputable sources.
Formatting: While plain text is fine, using clear, short paragraphs and bullet points (if applicable) can make your email easier to read.
Follow Up: If you don't get a response, consider sending a follow-up email or calling their office.

Why email is still valuable

While phone calls get high priority, emails serve important purposes:

Documentation: Emails create a written record of your communication.
Accessibility: Email is accessible to people who may have difficulty making phone calls.
Information Sharing: You can easily share links to relevant articles or documents in an email.
Organization: Staff members can easily organize and track email correspondence.
Volume: Elected officials offices are often more able to manage a larger volume of emails than phone calls.
